Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) on Wednesday said Americans should brace themselves for economic hurt when President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House and implements his proposed tariffs on imported goods.
“We are going to be the ones that are suffering, and for those that thought inflation was bad, even though it has come down, even though that it is honestly cooled off here a lot quicker than it cooled off in the rest of the world, let me just tell you, it’s time to buckle up, buttercup, because it is about to be on and popping if he … gets half of this done,” Crockett told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes.
“Right now, looking at the henchmen that he is trying to put into his administration, we are on track to see a lot of these negative things impact our economy,” the congresswoman added.
Mainstream economists, though, have warned that such tariffs — alongside Trump’s vow to deport millions of immigrants lacking permanent legal status — will make prices soar. Executives at the retailers Walmart and Lowe’s have also warned of possible price increases at their stores.
